Degradation mechanism
- PE/PP/PS is not degradable because of molecular weight as many as 250,000 Mol so that microorganism is unable to erode PE/PP/PS as carbon source. If PE/PP/PS with 5,000-10,000 Mol, it could be eroded as carbon source by microorganism. Please refer to Norrish Reaction.
- If in natural environment, UV sunlight is needed for photodecomposition; If in artificial environment, UV light is needed for photodecomposition. Photodegradable accelerant absorbs and accumulates heat energy so that big molecules with higher Mol are embrittled and cracked to small molecules with lower Mol.
- UV sunlight under natural environment differs from season to season and from place to place. Therefore photodegradation under natural environment is not precisely controllable and predictable, it may take months and years for photodegradation.
- UV light under artificial environment is adjustable and stable. Therefore photodegradation under artificial environment is relatively controllable and predictable, it always incorporates prodegradant, which oxidizes and embrittles the chemical bonds or links in the polymers in the presence of UV light, heat and humidity, that is a accelerated process of photodegradation.
- Artificial environment is always built by organization or government.
- If landfill in rubbish yard, heat energy under earth embrittles and cracks down big molecules to small molecules because of auto-oxidization, which is essential under environment without UV sunlight and UV light.
- Photodegradable action is the first stage of the degradation related with the presence of UV light and heat.
- Biodegradable accelerant attracts and breeds microorganism such as bacteria and fungi.
- Either in natural environment or in artificial environment, microorganism is needed for biodegradation.

- Microorganism around PE/PP/PS plastics generated by biodegradable accelerant, small molecules are eroded and swallowed by microorganism, digestible system of microorganism turns small molecules to water and CO2 .
- Biodegradable action is the second stage of the degradation related with the presence of microorganisms.
- Along with decreasing molecular weight, polymer (PE/PP/PS) becomes embrittlement. While molecular weight as small as 10,000 Mol, biodegradable accelerant breeds more and more microorganism.
